Te Arai Beach Hieroglyphics, East Coast New Zealand

Coastal beaches are consistently defined & redefined by wind, wave and tide. This work pays homage to the temporary form & boisterous swells of Te Arai Beach through carving temporary hieroglyphics across the sands surface using hand & tool.

Te Arai is home to an array of remarkable wildlife, including Bottlenose Dolphins, Dotterels, Gekos and Gulls, all of which were included in the wider artwork. Te Arai beach & coastline has been shaped over millennia from exposure to unchallenged swells and winds from the Pacific Ocean. The sands white colouring comes from a combination of seashells and hard minerals eroded over thousands of year.

Part of an ongoing series, this body of work pays homage to the dynamic & ever-changing landscapes of New Zealand, through carving temporary hieroglyphic stories into their surfaces using hand & tool. Shortly after installed, our environment swallows up the markings and return the sites to their natural form. The works are preserved through photography print only.
