Te Henga (Bethells Beach) photographic print

$650.00

Te Henga (Bethells Beach) Hieroglyphics, West Coast New Zealand.

Sand dunes are dynamic, transient & temporary in form. This work pays homage to these characteristics through carving temporary hieroglyphics across the sands surface using hand & tool. Eventually wind, rain and the sands settlement swallows up these markings, returning the dunes to natural form. The work is preserved through this print only.

The sands at Te Henga (Bethells Beach) have accumulated over 4,500 years. These sands contain minerals derived from the volcanic rocks of Taranaki (the artists birth region), and carried north by coastal wind currents. This volcanic material contains iron, which gives many of New Zealand's west-coast beaches their unique dark colouring.

Part of an ongoing series, this body of work pays homage to the dynamic & ever-changing landscapes of New Zealand, through carving temporary hieroglyphic stories into their surfaces using hand & tool. Shortly after installed, our environment swallows up the markings and return the sites to their natural form. The works are preserved through photography print only.
